RV insurance Coverage

RV insurance coverage

Traveling with recreational vehicles has become a common American pastime. They allow families to travel the country and see sights in a comfortable environment without having to pay for multiple hotel stays. Having the proper RV insurance coverage & protection will allow you and your family to travel without worry. Recreational vehicles and travel trailers are different than automobiles, are require a different type of insurance policy to ensure they are adequately protected.

What is it?

RV insurance coverage is insurance specific to the needs of recreational vehicles and travel trailers. These policies generally cost less than if a person were to insure the RV on their automobile policy because less claims are filed under these policies. They come with coverages that are not found on an automobile policy such as additional protection for personal property in the RV, replacement coverage (which most often has a limit of age on the RV, such as 5 years), emergency road service coverages (including towing), emergency travel expenses coverage, and also coverage for RV accessories, such as awnings or satellite dishes. They also provide RV insurance coverage for the contents of the RV or travel trailer, such as plumbing and kitchen fixtures. These policies can also cover for full time recreational vehicle use, which is usually not considered covered or acceptable under standard auto insurance policies.

How does it work?

RV insurance can be purchased from most major insurance companies, or companies that specialize in providing RV insurance coverage. These types of policies benefit RV owners because they cover more than standard automobile policies cover for RVs, are customizable to the travelers needs, and are affordable. If you had a recreational vehicle on a standard auto policy and it was involved in an accident, the auto insurance company would most likely not cover any interior fixtures, would pay the actual cash value of the RV (which may not completely pay to replace the RV), and would not be able to pay for a hotel room while the RV is repaired or other arrangements could be made. They also may not pay for towing for recreational vehicles, damage to awnings or anything attached to the exterior of the recreational vehicle, or carry liability limits that are adequate.

How much do you need?

The great thing about RV insurance coverage is how customizable it is. A provider will ensure that the required liability limits are included on the policy. They will also ensure that your finance companies requirements are satisfied as well.  A recreational vehicle owner may want to carry higher limits of liability on their policy as well because a RV would do more damage and cause more injury than the standard vehicle would. Otherwise, a policyholder may be able to choose what coverages they would like to carry based on the benefits offered by the specific company, their costs, and their families needs.

Expert Tips and Info

While RV insurance coverage is generally less expensive than insuring these vehicles on an auto policy, the individual recreational vehicle and its value may impact the cost of the policy. If one was are looking at different RVs for purchase, they may want to get quotes on all  possible purchases so they know what to expect as far as insurance premiums go. Also, if an individual purchases a RV policy through a company where they have other insurance policies, they may get additional discounts on the RV policy, or thier other policies.
